Sheraton Downtown - Chicago, IL
This is a highly rated hotel where VIPs including presidents have stayed. First, the good things: the Riverside Cafe (lower level) was wonderful and the breakfast buffet was delicious. All the staff there, and at the rest of the hotel were friendly and courteous, and the kids enjoyed watching the chef prepare their breakfasts.
Great location. The views from the hotel were awesome (we were on the 18th floor) overlooking the river and Lake Michigan. The other side of the building has great city views.
Now, the bad news… The front desk and concierge is very understaffed! Before we arrived (and needed directions) we were put on hold three times. We waited a half hour to check in! (We had reservations). We gave them the benefit of the doubt that it was a busy summer Saturday, but service there did not improve. When we needed laundry bags sent up we kept getting voicemail. Several times we had to physically go down to the front desk to ask for something small. Very aggravating. Once we called the concierge to make reservations for us and asked them to call back to confirm.. A half hour went by, no call back, and when we tried calling down, got the voicemail again. So my husband went down to check..and the reservations had not been made yet! When we complained to the management, they handled our complaints with discounts and even a night free. That is fine but it didn’t stop the aggravation.
The front desk people and concierge’s job is to reduce vacation stress, not add to it! Next time we’re trying the new Embassy Suites down the street.
