Renaissance North Shore – Chicago, IL
We got a good deal on Hotels.com and decided to stay at this hotel – right outside of Chicago (in a good area). The hotel looks very nice inside. There is also a pool and a fitness center, and the parking is free. It took us twenty minutes (at most) to get to downtown Chicago, and Evanston is very close by if you want to catch a quick meal outside of the city.
I do have a few complaints, however. The second day that we were there, we discovered a community of ants living in the corner of our room and we asked to move when we called guest services. Within an hour of unpacking in the new room, we spotted and killed two roaches. We again reported it to guest services, who that time around were far less apologetic and acted as though they weren’t very surprised. Because we booked through Hotels.com, they acted as though there was little that they could do. We were told that we could move to a smoking room (we were non-smoking before) and given vouchers for free breakfast. It was already late and we were on our way out the door. By the time we returned, we had decided that it was too late to move (and we didn’t feel that we shouldn’t have to shell out another $4 to the bell boy for a problem that wasn’t our fault). The next morning there were ants around the roach that we had killed and we were pretty grossed out (not to mention worried that we would take roaches home with us).
Also, the second day that we were there we wanted to swim, but the water in the indoor pool looked really murky (could’ve been the pool lights making it look that way?) and the tiles were dirtier that the average pool. We got in anyhow and got out shortly after because the pool floor was dirty and it didn’t have that “pool” smell at all (which made us wonder how long ago it had been cleaned).
I understand that these things happen and MAYBE in the future I will give it another chance. It is summer and maybe they don’t usually have an insect problem (we were on the tenth floor though- that’s pretty far for ants to travel…) and it is possible that we might have stayed there right before the pool was due to be cleaned (to be fair).
Next time, however, I will find out what a hotel’s policy is before using an internet savings site (will they take care of problems, or will it be Hotel.com’s problem?).
