This hotel was excellent. The pool side suites are a must, though a bit expensive. The two balcony’s (one overlooking the garden, and one overlooking the pool), and the whirlpool made for 2 is very romantic. Also, the beautiful marble table, and the cozy furniture add a lot of character, and charm. I give it 5 stars on my list.
This is the best Hotel in the area for the price.
Amenities included free high-speed Internet access, free breakfast buffet, HD flat-screen TVs, an indoor pool and whirlpool, and club-quality exercise equipment. Good temperatures for both pool and whirlpool hot tub. The rooms nice, typical Marriott.
Good breakfast too!
The Lockview Motel is one of those cabin style set-ups that still exist along the old highways. This one is directly across the street from the locks at Sault Ste. Marie.
Unlike most of the motels of that era, this one is not run down to the point of non existance. The cabins and rooms have been completely renovated on the inside and out. The rooms are spotless, and very tastefully decorated. The fixtures and furniture look new. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The complementary breakfast was fine. There were fresh donuts, juice, cereal, and do-it-yourself egg muffins with sausage and cheese. The price was very reasonable.
We will put the Lockview in our plans whenever we go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
The Best Western Georgian Inn is conveniently located on Gratiot Avenue just north of I-96. Has very nice check in lobby and banquet facilty. They have a nice courtyard with outdoor pool,(not practical for MI) which most rooms face so it is a nice view, and good continental breakfast.
The rooms are nice looking, but the electrical is in bad need of some updating. Our family stayed in quite a few of the rooms due to a wedding reception at the banquet room and all had the same complaint; All the electrical plugs were so loose you could not keep anything plugged in; it would just fall out. In my room a wallhung lamp made sizzling noises and would not stay on.
The maid service was poor. One family member made a reservation thru the internet for a cheaper price with a confirmation number and was told no such number existed and could not have that room price. For the price range, we expected more.
At one time this was one of the finest hotels in the country and my personal favorite. I’ve been fortunate to stay in some of the finest hotels in the country and at one time the Amway Grand was the best. Alas, this once great hotel is past its prime.
The structure is beautiful and well mantained, but the service has been slipping dramatically over the last few years. The Grand is still a gorgeous structure – and if the service only kept pace it truly would be grand. You can spend lass than $100 a night and be right across the street at the Courtyard Marriot – which even has a tube connecting it to the Amway – so even in the harshest weather you can walk over and enjoy the scenery and bar at the Grand while enjoying great savings across the street. Energized management may bring the Grand back to life.
