Maine
Howard Johnson – Portland, ME
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at! The rooms were filthy and there wasn’t one staff member that was helpful or polite for that matter. The manager, Mr.Heisler was completely rude when I complained about front desk staff and told me to go stay somewhere else if I didn’t like it.
Amerisuites – Portland, ME
Amerisuites is reasonably priced for a suite. The property is close to the Maine Mall and ton’s of shopping and restaurants. The rooms are clean and comfortable. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting the Portland, Maine area.
Sudbury Inn – Bethel, ME
Pros: Great pub downstairs.
Cons: A band played in the basement pub until 1am. Too loud to sleep. The room was also getting smoky from the 1st floor fireplace. Around midnight we asked to move and the staff kindly placed us on the 3rd floor. The beds in that room were HORRIBLE – imagine sleeping on an uneven board with a thin layer of mattress on top. We tossed and turned until 3:30am, which is when we gave up on our ‘anniversary getaway’, packed up and left in complete disgust and exhaution, never to return.
Bethel Spa Inn – Bethel, ME
Pros: Friendly staff, comfortable, clean rooms. Reasonable $ for pricey Bethel area (we pd $58 in Jan ‘02). Central downtown – walk to restaurants, stores. (Drive 3-4 miles to Sunday River Ski Area). Beds were on the soft side.
Cons: No crib available! Light sleepers beware – the brand new a/c-heater units are loud and disruptive. On a cold night (25 deg) the heater turned on every other minute. We kept ours off all night just so we could try to sleep – woke up 3x to heat the room. Also at 4:30-5am the road maintenance crews start up – and to us country folk they are l-o-u-d.
